FRATERNAL HEALTH & SAFETY INITIATIVE

Alcohol & Other Drug Abuse Prevention

Our Programming

The CHOICES Program takes a harm reduction approach to prevent risky alcohol use for college students. Our customized version of the CHOICES Program provides our Consortium Member Groups with the look and feel to which undergraduate fraternity men and sorority women will identify and build into broader chapter discussions. Content addressing the illicit use of drugs has been added. A facilitator’s guide with an exclusive, complimentary PowerPoint® Deck is included for a more interactive facilitation.

How to Use the Materials

The Fraternal Health and Safety Initiative (FHSI) created best practices for our member fraternity and sorority chapters to use in their efforts to prevent Alcohol and Drug abuse. These educational materials are designed both to assist chapters as a whole to address these issues and to assist individual members in their efforts to live healthier lifestyles. The CHOICES Program features a pre-program and post-program assessment and a student participant workbook. The module also provides an opportunity for members to practice their intervention skills for high-risk consumption situations. A facilitator’s guide with an exclusive, complimentary PowerPoint® Deck is included for a more interactive facilitation.

CHOICES

The “CHOICES” Program is an innovative alcohol abuse prevention program for college students that was written by Dr.’s Alan Marlatt and George Parks at the University of Washington and published by The Change Companies. This program is based upon 20 years of research funded by the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and has been recognized as an effective approach to alcohol abuse prevention for college students.

Topics for discussion and reflection include:

  • A facilitated group discussion about alcohol use, exposure to harm and ways to reduce harm from alcohol consumption
  • Enhanced fraternity/sorority discussion through the incorporation of “Gordie’s Call” materials and case discussion
  • A chance to review drinking behavior individually vs. peers and in context of chapter behavior and fraternal values
  • Opportunities for each individual member to take responsibility for making low risk decisions involving alcohol
  • Additional sections tailored to marijuana and other drugs that can also be facilitated as part of this program
